11th Annual NASP National Tournament Set For May 8-10

by Al Escobedo

The 11th Annual NASP National Tournament kicks off Thursday, May 8th in Louisville, Kentucky.

Records will fall once again as the NASP National Tournament is set for Thursday, May 8th through the 10th. In 2012 the NASP National Tournament was certified by Guinness World Records as the largest archery tournament in the world with 7,804 participants. 10,800 are registered for this year’s event and officials expect about 10,500 archers to compete at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.

The first flight will release arrows at 4:45 PM on Thursday with flights all day on Friday and Saturday. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 5:00 PM Saturday evening. The top 4th through 12thgrade individual archers and archery teams from 39 states will compete. 5 boys and 5 girls will receive scholarships totally $77,000 from sponsors including Mathews Inc., Gordon Composites, Plano, Morrell Targets, Field Logic, BCY, Neet, and New Archery Products.

Archers shoot targets at 10 and 15 meters with a Genesis bow. A score of 300 is perfect with scores of 10 on each of the 30 total arrows each archer shoots. In addition to the traditional NASP shoot, student archers will have an opportunity to shoot a 3D range as well thanks to a new partnership with the International Bowhunting Organization (IBO). The NASP® IBO 3-D Challenge will give students a chance to experience the fun of 3-D archery in a NASP®-friendly style at familiar shooting distances and of course, Genesis bows and arrows. Competing archers will shoot 30 scored arrows, at foam animal targets for a possible 300 point.

The national aspect of this tournament is a great experience on and off the range. It gives students a chance to meet other kids with similar interests despite geographic differences. Many of the competitors will shoot the NASP World Tournament in Madison, WI in July. The Alliant Energy Center will host archers from the US, Canada, United Kingdom, and Africa on July 11, 12, and 13. The targets will stay up in Madison for three more days for the 2014 NASP All-Nation All-Star Championship July 14-16.
